Summer Time In The Garden

The Summer Holidays have arrived and the garden is enjoying many new visitors and garden lovers!

Summer time offers a feeling of excitement in the garden as everything is putting its energy in to expanding and sending out new growth at every opportunity. The Koi carp are preparing to breed for the season – as the temperatures are getting nice and warm and they always wait until the summer when its been very sunny and warmed the water. The female Koi are now huge and filled with their eggs ready to lay and the males are following them around the pond now in anticipation of the big event. The trees are rustling as the wind blows through the leaves and the old growth is dropping to make way for all this new foliage- especially the bamboos!

The light was beautiful and the sunshine felt wonderful as I walked from the shade into the sun. I spotted so much life when I visited the garden yesterday; the Koi were swimming gracefully around the pond and they all came out for their breakfast feed (about 20 or so of the big ones), I sadly didn’t manage to catch them on camera: but I counted 12 baby ghost Koi born at least a couple of years ago in the pond – now swimming near the pond-weed, damselflies were flitting around the water and one landed right by me on the bridge. There are river-boatmen skating all over the pond water and birds singing and flying around the garden. The wildlife made me feel like I was being encapsulated by nature and the sound of the water added to this feeling beautifully.

I have spoken to many visitors recently and people are so frequently touched by the garden and its feeling of tranquility. Its always so wonderful to hear how much people love visiting the garden and it makes all our hard work so worthwhile.

Although summer is traditionally not the time of year to experience the majority of flowering plants, there are still a few blossoms to be discovered in the garden at the moment, which add a beautiful pop of colour to the landscape of greens and reds.
